It has been cloudy every day we have been here, and today brought the rain. Of course, the day we had saved for the beach. Oh well, we went anyway, took an ancient taxi to Miraflores, the money neighborhood of Lima. I think today was a holiday, as there were even more people and families out than on a usual Sunday, and a celebratory vibe. There was a huge parade gearing up the entire time we were over in Miraflores that we saw stretching for miles on our way back to Central Lima.
It was nice to see the beach. The water was calm but there were many surfers a ways out in the water, just waiting for a wave big enough to ride. The beach is a thin strip down the coast with a cliff face coming up to meet it. There were tennis clubs, and the huge mall built into the side of the cliff. It was a little chilly, and muggy at the same time.
We had a ncie last day in Lima, it was fun seeing a new neighborhood, but it was nice to get back to our old one. We ate a lot of street food, and walked along the pedestrain streets with the hoards of people out. There were street musicians, and balloon venders, and the portraitists, and all kinds of street stalls, and every store had their music booming so that it created just a wall of sound that you could pick out certain songs only when you were right in front of a place. AWe went and got pisco sours at this little sidewalk restaurant, only to find out it was an offshoot of this chain called Norkys that has people dressed up in animal costumes dancing around, and a menu that looks like Denny's. We both decided we don't much care for the drink, but it gets the job done, for sure!
We went to our favorite bar and shared beers while people and spanish music video watching. It was fun to just move from place to place and see the colors and moving lights and smells of food, and it all felt like a carnival. now we are back having beers on the roof and planning out our morning tomorrow. We get on the bus at noon. We both feel a bit sad to leave, could spend a while more here, but time is getting tight, and it is time.
Going to put on loads of bug spray as the biting bugs have found me here and my skin became a feasting ground last night. Seriously, it is horrible and uncomfortable, and I feel swollen and itchy.
